New Things

I imagine the sporadic entries result in even fewer views of our site than if we updated at least weekly, right? Oh well.

Q: I wonder how many of our readers use their check book registers to keep an accurate, up to date, balance of their accounts as opposed to relying on computer software like quicken or Microshaft Money.

Recently Wifey has been working hard harvesting produce from our garden and preparing what ended up being 12 quarts of green beans for freezing. She picked about 12 cucumbers (yes, just yesterday) and we have 6 zuchini's so far. We've been enjoying fresh peas and froze about 1.5 qts in addition. The broccoli has been producing nicely; we've had 3 cuts and frozen about 6 quarts of broccoli.

5260 STREET NUMBER
We purchased this unfinished "inn keeper" sign back in September 2005. I finally got around to fastening it to our house today. I've been chipping away at it the past 2 months but up until then it was just sitting on a shelf in the basement. After staining, three coats of urethane and then laying out the numbers this little project is finally done. To date our house number was written in permanent marker on a sheet of white paper, taped to our screen door window. I think it is a little crooked on the wall but its not bad for my first try, right?

WILLOW & MUFFIN
Wifey surprised us on July 4 by bringing home a new kitten from the pet shop. (but there are two kittens, right? I see two... am I going nuts?) She originally went to the grocery store to get some food for lunch and came home with a kitten. Talk about spur of the moment! She held the cute, little, fuzzy demon up next to her pouty face and said to me, "hubby, she has a sister." Boy, I didn't see that one coming. She brings home one kitten then asks me if she get another one! Unfortunately, I had already committed to two cats back at Christmas time. So what's the big difference between two and three? (Umm, well, that's 50% more kitty poop, kitty litter, kitty food and kitty damage)

- Thanks NEB!

Hey, I do check out your blog from time to time. I enjoy hearing what's going on at your household and seeing pictures of your children. The blog I have is mainly for posting pictures of our kids but I haven't posted anything for at least 2 months!!
To answer the question you posted...I actually now exclusively use Microsoft Money to keep my checkbook straight. I've been doing it for the past year and a half. The reason I originally started was because I was trying to find a way to catagorize my expenses and see where in the world our money disappears to!! I am using MM because it happened to come with our computer when we bought it 4-5 years ago. When I first started, I tried to record everything in both MM and my checkbook register b/c I couldn't let go of my precious checkbook register. It was too much work to do both of course so I quit MM for a while. On Jan 1, 2005 I ditched the register and started using MM exclusively. It's been working really well for me. I'm really glad I made the switch. Well this is really long, so if you want to know more you can call or email me :)

I don't use anything like MM or Quicken- I tried a few times but couldn't figure out how to use the programs in a way that made sense to me.

However, we don't record transactions as we go along in the register- I log into our bank account online every couple of days and record whatever Wachovia says we've spent. So if Wachovia makes a mistake, there's a chance we won't catch it (unless it's way, way off.)

PS I would humbly submit, Mr. Martin, that going from 2 cats to 3 means a 50% increase in poop, litter, etc. (If you went from 3 cats down to two, that WOULD be a 33% DEcrease in spending.) Percents are weird, aren't they? :-)
